中國人煮餸最講究鑊氣，但理工大學最新研究發現，不論使用煤氣及石油氣，燃燒時同樣會釋出致癌毒氣甲醛。煎和炸等落油多和油煙大的煮食烹調方法，釋出甲醛愈多。專家警告，甲醛吸入人體「有入無出」，只會不斷積聚，變成肺癌元兇。天氣冷在家中打邊爐時，千萬別緊閉窗戶，應開盡全屋抽氣扇及抽油煙機，以免自製毒氣室；在家煮食後亦應關閉廚房門，開抽氣扇半小時，盡抽油煙。

瘜肉變癌約10至20年
中大賽馬會大腸癌教育中心總監蔡錦輝指出，大腸癌由大腸內壁的瘜肉發展而來，過程約要10至20年。只要及早發現及切除，可避免演變成大腸癌。
根據中大研究，年長者、男性、直系親屬（即父母、子女及兄弟姊妹）曾患大腸癌、吸煙、超重肥胖及糖尿病，均屬患上大腸瘜肉的高危因素。換言之，這些因素與大腸瘜肉的出現，關係極大。
年長吸煙超重男性高風險
中大據此研發一套評估工具「大腸瘜肉預測指數」（簡稱CU-CPI），使用者只要填寫特定表格（見附表）並計算分數，便可得知是否屬患上大腸瘜肉的「高風險」人士。
蔡錦輝稱，由於研究指高風險人士出現大腸瘜肉的比率高達七成八，有後期腫瘤（包括早期癌變及大腸癌 ）的比率更達一成六，故建議他們接受大腸鏡檢查，一旦發現瘜肉，便可以 立即切除。
